Stage 1 ECU Remapping in Kent: What’s Involved?

A Stage 1 remap adjusts the engine’s software to improve performance while retaining the vehicle’s standard hardware. The changes depend on the engine, gearbox and condition of the vehicle.

1. General Vehicle Health Check

We start with a general health check to assess whether the vehicle is suitable for remapping.

This includes checking for stored fault codes and obvious issues that may need attention. If we identify a concern, we explain what needs investigating before proceeding.

2. Reading the ECU

The ECU controls how the engine operates. We read its software using specialist equipment, with the method depending on the vehicle and ECU fitted.

This provides the starting point for the Stage 1 modifications.

3. Modifying the File for Stage 1

The software file is modified to adjust relevant engine settings, such as fuelling, ignition timing and boost pressure where applicable.

The aim is to improve power delivery and torque within appropriate limits for the vehicle’s standard components.

4. Flashing the Modified File to the ECU

Once prepared, the modified file is written back to the ECU using specialist programming equipment.

After programming, we check that the process has completed correctly and carry out further diagnostic checks.

5. Test Driving the Vehicle

We finish with a test drive to assess how the vehicle drives following the remap, checking its response and general operation.
